Como lleva siendo costumbre desde 2014, Geoff Keighley llevará a cabo los Game Awards en su edición 2020, esta vez de manera virtual por la pandemia que se vive actualmente, con motivo de premiar a lo mejor que la industria ofreció a lo largo del año, además de presentar al público nuevos avances de juegos que ya han sido anunciados previamente, o incluso se esperan sorpresas por parte de los estudios que se presentan a la ceremonia.
The Last of Us: Part II, Gosth of Tsushima y Final Fantasy VII sobresalen por estar nominados en distintas categorías, Animal Crossing sorprendió de igual forma al estar compitiendo por juego del año, Among Us también fue inesperado, debido a que el juego salió en el año 2018, atribuyendo su nominación a la enorme popularidad que traspaso la frontera de los juegos a convertirse en una tendencia dentro del internet incluso para aquellos ajenos a los videojuegos.
Para este año se ha agregado una nueva categoría, “Innovación en accesibilidad” la cual busca reconocer juegos o tecnología que aborden las características de accesibilidad para los usuarios, todas las demás se han mantenido.
